This 16-CD Hyperion edition presents an exceptionally comprehensive survey of Chopin’s music, bringing together every surviving work—from the solo piano repertoire, the concertos and other works for piano and orchestra to the Cello Sonata, Piano Trio and songs. The collection also includes the recently discovered “New York” waltz, recorded by Sir Stephen Hough—the only work in the set not performed by Garrick Ohlsson.
Winner of the 1970 International Chopin Piano Competition and, more recently, chair of its jury, Ohlsson has long been regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of this repertoire. His complete survey has received considerable critical acclaim: ‘Ohlsson is in a class of his own’ (Pianist), while International Record Review described it as ‘an outstanding achievement, which any genuine Chopin lover and student of Romantic music should own … a landmark in the recording of Chopin’s music’.
Other distinguished artists include the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra under Kazimierz Kord, violinist Leila Josefowicz, cellist Carter Brey and contralto Ewa Podleś. The 16 CDs are housed in a clamshell box with two booklets in English, French and German—an important reference edition for Chopin connoisseurs and students of Romantic music.
