Steven Isserlis' latest album is inspired by the year 1851, which was a time of inventions, exhibitions, and creativity. The sonatas by Ignaz Moscheles and Robert Schumann featured on the album—the Violin Sonata No. 2 was arranged for cello by Isserlis himself—were both composed in that year. The program is interspersed with four miniatures, including a transcription of a Schumann song and the famous “Ave Maria” by Bach/Gounod. At the heart of the album is an Érard grand piano from 1851, which won an award at the Great Exhibition in London and is played here by Connie Shih. The piano used on the album may be one of the first instruments presented at the Great Exhibition. Steven Isserlis, CBE and winner of two Gramophone Awards, is a highly successful cellist, author, and broadcaster worldwide.
