The Hyperion Romantic Piano Concerto (1991-2007)

“Every wildly romantic concerto imaginable, united in a single pianistic masterpiece”: this was the verdict of the renowned English magazine Gramophone on the groundbreaking Romantic Piano series from the Hyperion label. Few other projects can match the ambitious goal of this series. The ambition to discover, record, and present the great Romantic piano concertos to a modern audience is a Herculean task.
This first edition of a total of two boxes covers the beginnings of the series from 1991 to 2007. It comprises an impressive 130 works, 14 orchestras, 21 conductors, 19 pianists, and 59 different composers. The booklet contains introductory texts by Stephen Hough and Piers Lane, as well as newly commissioned essays by Andrew Keener, who produced half of the series, and Mike Spring, the initiator of this project, whose encyclopedic knowledge of the piano repertoire made the entire series possible in the first place. The individual sleeves are based on the original album covers. The booklet also contains an index to facilitate the search for composers, works, and performers.
