Daniel Hope celebrates the 30th anniversary of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, of which he is artistic director, with a new album. "Music For A New Century" forms a cross-section of composing in postmodern times. The four works collected here were all commissioned by the New Century Chamber Orchestra (some in cooperation with other institutions), which shows the enthusiasm with which this orchestra is committed to new compositions and contemporary classical music. "Spontaneously, you probably wouldn't associate these four composers with each other," Daniel Hope says. "But with this combination, we're celebrating the orchestra and its creative engagement with new music." Philip Glass's Third Piano Concerto, premiered in 2017, was first performed by the ensemble on the U.S. West Coast back in 2018, and the other three works are world premiere recordings: Lament for solo violin and strings by Mark-Anthony Turnage, the Double Concerto for violin, piano and strings by Tan Dun, and a brand-new Jubilee composition by Jake Heggie. The soloist on piano is Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov. The works span a remarkable range of musical ideas and styles.
