Born in Lisbon in 1944, Maria João Pires rose to international acclaim when she won the International Beethoven Competition in 1970. Her piano playing has often been described as magical, captivating and deeply poetic. Acclaimed in particular for her interpretations of Mozart and Chopin, she can look back, at the age of 75, on a rich discography. Her long-standing relationship with Deutsche Grammophon, with whom she signed an exclusive contract in 1989, has resulted in a series of outstanding recordings centered on her great musical loves: Mozart and Chopin, alongside Schubert and Schumann.

This comprehensive, limited-edition box set celebrates the career of the great Portuguese pianist across 38 CDs: The box set includes landmark recordings of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and Schubert, as well as the legendary piano concertos by Mozart and Schumann with Claudio Abbado and rare Fado recordings. It also features recordings of iconic chamber music repertoire by Mozart, Brahms, Franck, Schumann and Debussy, among others, with violinist Agustin Dumay and cellist Jian Wang. “Complete Recordings for Deutsche Grammophon”, featuring the original covers of the first releases and a booklet with liner notes by Harriet Smith, offers a fascinating overview of the work of this great pianist.
