With her new album “Jóhann Jóhannsson: Piano Works”, pianist Alice Sara Ott pays tribute to the legacy of one of Hollywood’s most visionary composers: Jóhann Jóhannsson. His music is defined by emotional depth, gentle force, and a distinctive musical voice. Ott, known for her poetic playing, her versatility and her experience in both contemporary and core classical repertoire, creates a beautiful new sound world on both a grand and an upright piano.
These premiere recordings are Alice Sara Ott’s solo piano reimaginations, bringing 30 of the late Icelandic composer’s hauntingly beautiful works to life with her personal touch – marked by great musicality and a profound understanding of his musical language. The repertoire spans Jóhannsson’s compositions for acclaimed films such as “The Theory of Everything”, “Personal Effects”, and “Copenhagen Dreams”, as well as pieces from his celebrated studio albums like “Orphée” and “Englabörn”.
With exceptional subtlety, Alice Sara Ott captures the essence of Jóhannsson’s vision while creating her own sound world. “There’s a very special intimacy and urgency in his musical language,” Ott says. “It speaks to what people long for in today’s noisy and sometimes very dissonant world. The way he builds the architecture and structure of his music really allows you to refocus and reflect.”
“Jóhann Jóhannsson: Piano Works” is more than a homage: the album lets his music live on and opens new perspectives on an extraordinary creative legacy.
For the visuals of the artwork, Alice Sara Ott worked with friends and collaborators of Jóhann Jóhannsson, the photographer Jónatan Gretarsson and art director Anders Ladegaard. The CD booklet is illustrated with atmospheric shots of the Icelandic landscape, as well as portraits of both pianist and composer, and contains liner notes written by music critic Wyndham Wallace, who previously wrote liner notes for Jóhannsson’s records.
